Chapter Four

A day after his first phase, Aedan followed his wife silently through the woods. Careful not to let her hear his approach, he stayed far behind. Losing her once, he tracked her to a small clearing but unsure as to what she was doing, he watched and waited.

Slowly she began to sway, her hair was lose and her gown billowed about her. Had he not been so angry or curious as to what she was doing, he would have gone to her and told her how beautiful she was.

But then she began to move more actively. She jumped and swirled around, her arms moving in a dance of their own. No move was repeated. When she raised her arms up towards the sky, Aedan saw the light of dawn break through the shadowy curtain of night. Once Isla was standing in full sunlight she stopped, her hands extended up towards the heavens. Then slowly she lowered them and with it, bowed her head mumbling a prayer or a chant he was not sure. When she was still for a long moment, he decided to approach her.

“Isla,” he called. She gasped and turned. “What are you doing?”

She stared at him, her eyes wide and wild.

“I… I was… I was welcoming the dawn,” she said.

“Do you do that often?” he asked, taking one step towards her.

“It is the largest snowfall we have had,” she answered. “I suppose I do it often enough though. I leave our bed when you are still asleep.”

“You never told me,” he stood with his feet apart and arms down at his sides, still an intimidating pose.

“I couldnae,” she answered.

“Why?” he demanded.

“Aedan,” she sighed. “Would you have understood?”

“You think me ignorant?” he demanded.

“Nay, never!” she replied.

“Then why?” he cried.

“Because I did nae want to lose you,” she said. “But it does nae matter now. You have no’ even spoke to me since you found out. You sleep every night on the hay in the barn and no’ on our pallet with me.”

“I am dealing with the loss of my mother, I am nae going to get into bed with you while I am in mourning,” he replied.

“I lost her too, Aedan!” she cried. “I am in just as much pain as you are and I need you. She was my confidant, my friend. And I feel like I did nae just lose her, but my husband as well.”

“She was my mother!” he shouted. “How do you think I felt? My wife has lied to me, our marriage built on lies and I find out my own mother was behind it?”

“That is no’ true!” she said.

“Stop,” he shouted. “I cannae talk to you, witch.”

Her eyes widened and she let out a cry. Aedan bit back the words the moment he said them but in the village that was what Druids were. Isla rushed passed him but his hand shot out to grab hold of her wrist. They were side by side and she leaned into him for a moment.
